Far superior musicians never make it out of their bedroom, let alone get to support their favourite bands and drink whiskey through the night with their long-time heroes. 2018 delivered and then some, time to look back in our annual Year Review Awards...

BEST GIG

Easily the toughest call with five clear standouts. From the big-time tasting Hard Rock Hell AOR and Sleaze Festivals, to three at our hometown church The Waterloo, supporting The Supersuckers, Xmas Shenanigans (with Massive Wagons) and… this year’s winner, by an inch – Roxfest! A night of pure celebration, the half century of legendary DJ and dear friend of the band Stevi Rox. We secured the date and lined-up four amazing bands containing great friends to join us in paying tribute to a guy who has helped us all, in rode Psychobabylon, The Midnight Dogs, The Idol Dead and Takeaway Thieves. Just about all our favourite people converged on a truly special night. Considering how good some of the 2018 gigs have been, it just shows this one was something else, the intangible, emotional, ‘let yourself go’ and rock ‘til you drop sensation. Finishing with Stevi and Wordy on stage and the entire crowd singing the words back at us, this was just immense!

Bit of a sore thumb on a largely brilliant hand dealt. Supporting Swedish Jazz-metal band ‘Shining’ on the first night of their ‘Animal’ Tour, we rocked up to Satan’s Hollow, Manchester on a cold dark Sunday afternoon. We only agreed the gig due to a friend getting us on the bill due to his love of Shining, but it didn’t seem implausible this might be a worthwhile venture. Manchester ain’t far, Hollow is a decent venue and despite our collective instincts suggesting plug-pulling, it was too close and we don’t like to withdraw late. If you’re sacking off a gig because it might suck – you shouldn’t have agreed to it in the first place. We encountered a sound engineer who may have been the victim of some kind of Swedish Jazz-metal gang-rape prior to our arrival. The main band had apparently sound-checked for hours and he was so pissed off there was urine dribbling from his eyes (could have been the jazz-rape). Copping for the opening slot the hapless promoter “needed us on”, but it was 6:45 and the posters and website stated “doors at 7”, something we only found out post-set, meaning those who travelled out for us found the tail end of our set, much to their bemusement. Gigs like this are reserved for the rearview, yet it served as a timely reminder in a head-on collision of “always trust your instincts".

Last year it may have seemed a ‘surprise’ victor or some sort of ‘Blackpool’ biased from us donkey riding rock munchers. This year it’s a no-brainer. Our first ever consecutive winner providing us with three 5-star gigs, the setting for our music video ‘Who We Are’ and hours of enjoyment – take a bow, The Waterloo Music Bar. A superb venue which gets better every time you enter. Ian and the gang deserve every success – we love ‘em and we love the place. The rise of the Waterloo knows no limits. The bands coming through the door speak to that and the punters who follow echo it. One day Ian’s dream of Black Stone Cherry out on the Bowling Green will be realised… at least it doesn’t seem as ambitious as it once may have. All our respect and a massive thank you for what you’ve given us and the town this year.

In a year where we joined the fantastic Bullets & Octane on their tour for a couple of dates, featured on festivals with the likes of the Backyard Babies, L.A. Guns, Skid Row, as well as playing with chart-busting hard rock brothers, and last years winner of this award, Massive Wagons, it might have been a difficult choice… had it not been for the greatest rock n roll band in the world… The Supersuckers!
Our collective favourite band of all-time gave us the honour of supporting them twice on their 30th anniversary tour – the most special night being in Blackpool where we warmed the stage for them before they delivered ‘Evil Powers of Rock n Roll’ in its entirety (my number 1 album of all time for the record). Then kicking back and hanging through the small hours as we put the world to right over whiskey and beer. My favourite night of being in a band, largely down to the company, if you would have told the 19-year old who started this band he’d one day get to do that… well that fucker would have probably believed you, but still, it’s now a reality. Special. Defining. Fulfilling.

We’d just got through supporting the Suckers in Pershore at the ‘new’ Iron Road, not quite the old Iron Road, but decent all the same. We’d played ‘Born with a Tail’ to the man who wrote it, got the nod and then danced like maniacs through a ferocious first night of the tour set, with a good few comedy errors to let us know our fave band are human too, reassuring. By the finish we were so wasted Kal was already out cold in the car. Damo and me were on a mega-high, as was Scotty and even mr cool, Gibbons was in on the feel-good factor. Back in the Scott-mobile we raced off home, four hours with an ETA around 4:30am. We were discussing the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ movie and how many great songs Queen have, when Damo pipes up to tell us how shit Queen are and suggested we all hate them too we’ve just been overroared by the film and its nostalgia. Cue DJ Gibbons lining up every Queen song which we belted out all the way home. “No time for Damo, cause we are the champions… of the world!”. Got home, threw up and basked in sickening glory of a quality night.

Having just played a cracking set to a giant crowd on the second stage at HRH AOR, Hafan Y Mor in North Wales – right in between Choir Boyz and Skid Row on the main, the latter which we swiftly hopped over the thoroughfare to catch, it was drinks and conversations with the many quality folk in attendance. Gibbons and Mason departed, smartly retiring to their caravan. For me, stuck with the drunken combo of dumb and equally dumb, I stuck it out before deciding we best head back with the lights of the venue dimming. We began to follow the trail until we reached a bridge, I knew we didn’t need to cross it but Damo and Kal were adamant, absolutely positive, couldn't be more certain. Neither of them former Cub Scouts I should have whipped out my sixer badge and told ‘em to get fucked, but for some reason, call it gig-high plus tiredness, I let the lads lead me for a change. Next minute, “oh shit” says Kal, I look down and mine and his trainers are deep in some sludge, not a swamp but a muddy mess of little manoeuvrability. Damo begins laughing at our misfortune so I grab his collar and pull him in with us, it wouldn’t be an SB road tour without Damo’s clown-shoe Converse caked in mud. Stuck in the mud with no idea which way to go next Damo whips his phone out to make the miserable call for help to our bandmates who will now doubt find this hilarious. Scotty answers and when trying to direct Big Dame gives up as I demand the phone. Turns out we shouldn’t have crossed the bridge. I told ‘em, I fuckin’ knew it. An hour plus wasted, we trot back in the dark, covered in mud, pecking nonsense. A shite end to a fine day.

On a personal note supporting your all-time fave band will do it as far as achievements go, but once you’ve been and done that, it’s much less an achievement and much more a special memory. The biggest achievement this year comes in the way of a pretty heavy handed pat on our own backs. ‘Outsiders’, our fifth studio album is an awful long way from ‘Sweet Chin Music’ (album numero uno, a decade old next year). We’ve dared to be different, more different, yet remained true to ourselves throughout. Reviewers have unanimously loved it and claim we’re knocking on the door to the big time – but the clue is in the title, we’re outsiders in this game and we’re resigned to the fact that probably won’t happen, not in a pessimistic way, but in a realistic way which makes us all the more content in the fact we’ve made a pretty great album. Chapter Zero is our passion, Mass Vendetta is our musical evolution, Outsiders is our essence. We hope you liked it!

Last year Kally Ka$h shocked the world and stole Damo’s title for ‘Most Drunk’, it couldn’t happen two years in a row could it?
No, of course not. In truth Damien has been so well behaved this year he’s been unrecognisable to the sober eye, Kal and myself have done our fair share and were both in the running for this following several notable outings, then who comes galloping up the outside. He left it to the winter solstice, only ten days of the year remaining, following a sublime gig supporting the Massive Wagons before a sold-out capacity Waterloo. The free Red Stripes were going down like water in a desert, Damo’s facial inversion had begun, the sloping eye brows of a man well on his way to his old stomping ground – Wasted-ville. As the night drew to a close he pestered me about taxis, calling multiple and then not managing to get in any as we shuffled about, collecting merch and chatting. Eventually, with everything ready to go I went in search of the haunting hindrance, only to find he’d evaporated, a small patch of condensation on the venue ceiling. On my way home in the taxi my phone rings…
“Hey”, Damo bellows, sounding like Chewbacca with an apple in his mouth.
“Where are you bellend, I’ve just looked everywhere for you?” I reply.
“I’m in a field”
“A field, what the fuck are you on about?”
“I don’t know, I got a taxi and got out in a field, I don’t know where I am”
He then bursts into his monstrous laugh for the next several minutes as I tried my best to figure out which field it might be and how he might get home. He called me the next day to ask what happened, no recollection, duly reclaiming his annual award.

It has been one of, if not the, best year to date. Looking back on ’18, there are so many highlights, so much to be thankful for. The gig list (containing our usual 'star ratings') below, however, will not look so similar in 2019. As we head into year 15 we are taking a break from the stage. It’s a group decision, but, in short, life caught up. Two of us have young families, we’ve all just changed jobs, got promotions etc. resulting in extra responsibility, pressure, demands and the stress that rides with it. There are also personal reasons which I could probably summarise with us all being somewhat burnt out. We’ve had some truly enjoyable gigs this year, but the candle has been burning at both ends and we have to be careful not to melt it completely. Admittedly, there was a time where I thought this may be the end – the Suckers gig being a strange 'Game completion’ point, with my good wife Sally pointing out we could treat the rest of the time in the band as DLC. Fortunately, we feel a breather is a better option opposed to anything final. We need to get our houses in order before House Senton can rise again and march on the throne.

I didn't intend to end such a fine year on a down-note, just an honest one in case you wonder why we're not doing the usual and announcing a load of dates. As it stands we will be out of action until May and then we will take stock and see what's cooking. In the mean-time, spread the word, keep in touch, keep the flame alive and know with every fibre of our beings we appreciate your love and support to the core. Thanks for riding with the Outsiders through 2018, from us outlaw rockers to our outlaw friends, it ain’t time for the sunset yet!

It’s been a transitional 12 months for us Bombs, trading quantity for quality in approach. We played a hundred-plus gigs in the three years prior to this one, which isn’t a lot for the full-time pros, but for the working band it’s pretty impressive. Hitting the road every weekend became the norm, occasionally sacrificing the special buzz and beginning the feel of a second-job. Overplaying can have a negative effect on attendance as well as morale, if you’re available all the time people are less inclined to come and see you. If you do something too regularly, the novelty and enjoyment wears off. In 2017 we picked carefully and it paid off. Time to reflect on another highly enjoyable year, here’s the SB end of year awards…

BEST GIG

There were several strong candidates for this one. I personally loved the October 14th gig at the Waterloo in Blackpool, a packed house which included my wife, parents and many dear friends for an all-round storming show. However, there is one gig that really kick-started our year in terms of enthusiasm and regaining that essential hunger. A familiar haunt, temperature up high, with so many quality bands in one place on one weekend. The NLC RACPA Festival has become one of our favourites, and in this, our third appearance, it was a blistering affair. We hit the stage following the food break on the Sunday; our usual spot, opening the final evening acts. With 30 minutes, the set was on an incline. It just built and built until a ‘nothing quite like this’ climax. The response was phenomenal, and just in case the beers had swayed our opinion, someone had filmed the whole thing for posterity, verifying this was indeed top drawer of a very tall cabinet. Spending the rest of the night with friends watching excellent bands sealed it as a truly exceptional outing. Delighted to add we’re back in 2018 on 6th May for more Maze mayhem.

Winner: THE MAZE, NOTTINGHAM (30.04.17)
WORST GIG

Our usual star-ratings are at the end of this review and as you may notice there are a few two-stars based on either the fact the venue sucked, the crowd was sparse or we couldn’t hear a damn thing we were playing. Nevertheless, there is but a single one-star gig from this year and it recalls a rainy night in a rainy city. I think the reason we are so low on this one is that it was a strange night all-round, heart-to-hearts on the journey recounting personal strife. With dark clouds circling figuratively and literally, this one was never going to be special. Personal life doesn’t often overlap into the surreal Senton escape of Bombsville, but we’re such close friends that when it does the counsel is of the best variety and a good emotional clear out cleanses the soul better than any confessional box, no penance, no judgement. Whilst the venue was decent, there was only a handful in the crowd and the stage sound was about the worst all year, more mud than an Amazonian swamp. The weather matched the mood and whilst we performed well to the applause of the good folk who stuck it out late, it sticks out like a sore thumb as the only ‘downer’ of the 2017 gig calendar.

Loser: GULLIVERS, MANCHESTER (22.07.17)

BEST VENUE

This isn’t bias or some attempt at promotion. The honest truth is the best venue of 2017 for the SB has been the Waterloo in Blackpool. A few years back I never thought I would be saying that. Bear in mind we played the Arena Stage in the Winter Gardens at this year’s Rebellion Festival and sampled many other fine venues too. We’re a band who has been together since we were teenagers, in our early days, car-less and confined to the Fylde, we played Blackpool into a cold and crippling death. We’ve played just about everywhere you can imagine, North Pier, Tower Lounge, Stanley Park, even the Library… even Nellie Deans goddamit. In the last several years, with trailer in tow, we’ve ventured further afield, even overseas. This has been of great success to us improving as a band, gaining experience and growing our fan base. There’s not been a lot to entice us to rock regularly on the North West coast. After the Blue Room closed, the woeful shell of the ‘new’ Tache and the occasionally great Bootleg seem the only viable options. Then came Ian Fletcher and the Waterloo Rock Music Bar. Proper stage, proper lights, proper sound guy… proper good venue. Ian looks after the bands, beers, pizzas (something many places overlook, but really does garner immediate respect from acts… being fed and watered) but most of all, presents us with an opportunity to do our thing in the warm and friendly atmosphere of a grand old building. From telling my friends across the country to leave Blackpool off their touring schedules I’m quickly inviting all and sundry. Bigger acts are rolling in regularly and it’s a pleasure to see Blackpool back on the map for the quality, hard-working bands. Yeah, the stars show up in the centre occasionally and Rebellion is a class festival, but we needed something else, we needed the Waterloo. Now let’s all get about supporting it.

Winner: THE WATERLOO ROCK MUSIC BAR, BLACKPOOL
BEST BAND WE PLAYED WITH

Last year the Tygers of Pan Tang stole this one. A pro band that showed us what the rock game looks like a few levels up. Again, we’ve had the pleasure of sharing stages with some fine bands, but this year, there’s one band that clearly rises above all others. We shared a couple of festivals with them (Breaking Bands and Rockwich), where they topped the bill and delivered, but it was when we played support to them at our hometown in Blackpool it became apparent what a force this band has become. Massive Wagons are renowned as a bunch of good blokes who make some cracking original heavy rock music, but they now exhibit the confidence and ability of that aforementioned ‘level up’. A few days after an amazing night in Blackpool, they announced their signing with ‘Earache’ Records, joining the likes of Blackberry Smoke, Temperance Movement, Rivals Sons and many more top notch bands. They’re a class act and undoubtedly the best band we played with in 2017.

Winners: MASSIVE WAGONS

MOST MEMORABLE JOURNEY

Where to start… the never-ending journey to Norwich was a lot of fun, ripping on Damo for claiming he knew the place inside out due to his new traveling snake oil salesman job, generally just quality banter and laughter. Returning from the aforementioned NLC Festival in Nottingham was also nice, all on a high from the weekend and excited about the prospects for the rest of the year. I think the most memorable journey has to be the round-trip for Breaking Bands Festival. Heading down a night early to catch ‘Wagons’ and be fresh (yeah right) for the next day’s gig, we engaged in some fine dialogue and were all ready to party (bar Gibbons, who was ready to sleep). The return was after a long day of drinking in the sun, and poor old Kage slipped into the land of nod a couple of hours from home. The Daminati was born, an all-seeing cock appearing on his forehead, rendered from the sidereal realms inhabited by his Daminus occult cohorts. Home in no time, the aftermath was Damo cursing us all out, going incommunicado and blaming us for the all-seeing cock on his head. We laughed, we cried, Damo re-joined our Facebook chat, it was all good in the SB hood.

Winner: RETURN FROM BREAKING BANDS FESTIVAL
BIGGEST FUCK UP

It’s been a good year for Fucking up, the days of the ‘Train Wrecks’ we sing so fondly about are fading into the rear-view. On-stage it’s been pretty consistent, Scotty's stick-tricks coupled with his sweaty meat-hooks mean sticks still ping round the stage like pointed-pinballs. Damo managed to bust his bottom-E in the opening song at Dementia Fest and proceeded to play three songs before acknowledging he really needed that string. Off-stage Damo was also stealing the show leaving his luggage in Birmingham hotels and turning up for band practice sans guitar, “I thought we were having a meeting!”. The winner, and I know he’ll absolutely loathe this, is probably Mason. In Norwich we opted for a cold night of camping (well Damo, Scott and Kal did). Scott drove down a hill and parked as the lads put up their tents. When we were attempting to set off to the gig, no matter how hard he revved, the car was just skidding all over the hill. It became very apparent he’d made a mistake, and the mound of mud was here to punish. The Mason Road rage (Hill Rage?) emerged and he took everyone’s name in vain as he blamed the world for the formation of this tor and us for being in his presence. We were all ejected from the car, trailer unhooked and pushed, but the Mighty Mase-Mobile still floundered, slipping and sliding, leaving the once beautiful lush green hill-side carved up like the late Colin McRae had conducted a Twisted Metal tournament. Fifteen minutes of agony (comedy?) and he made it, stressed to the heavens and back round the hot way. We didn’t help, well we tried, we pushed and shoved, but most of all, the grinning and laughing did not help, can’t think why. Biggest Fuck up, “Shouldn’t have parked down that hill mate”, as I helpfully commented on the day…

Winner: MASON VERSUS THE HILL
BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT

Finally making the Rebellion line-up was a nice tick off the list this year, albeit on the same day as Bad Religion, one of our all-time favourites, who tore the Empress Ballroom apart with a phenomenal set. There is one achievement this year which may not seem like much to some, but it’s a big hurdle for us untrained musicians who wing it with distortion and cleverly constructed songs, accentuating positives and hiding negatives all the while. The mighty leap we made this year was… playing an acoustic set. Not one, but two… and three if you count the impromptu rehearsal at 2am, Roxx’s tent. We hit the acoustic stage at Breaking Bands Festival on a beautiful sunny Sunday, a day of playing football and drinking in excellent company. Damo admitted he was nervous, Johnny and Mason unusually quiet; personally I was in my element. Almost all the songs are written on my acoustic, it was refreshing not to fight for my vocal to be heard, to sit down, in a row and re-imagine some of electric ventures in the traditional format. The set went down way better than could be expected, the tent filled and filled and some of the feedback was the kind you live and play to hear. Safe to say, we loved it. So much so, we ended up playing a private party at T’Holy Diver in Bolton, acoustic Bombs striking again (more on that night shortly). We’ll be doing it again and one day, I’d love to do an acoustic recording, no strain in my voice and the stripped back rock and roll we enjoy playing exposed for all to hear.

Winner: FIRST ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE
MOST DRUNK

Kalum! Oh Kalum. Kally Ka$h as he now goes by, and the lad does rake it in our behalf so it’s an accurate, if not cheesy slice of nomenclature (says Joey Class). This award is usually reserved for our Damien, and I’d bet a few are surprised at him being usurped in 2017. Don’t be disappointed, Damo had a good bash, didn’t try and kill us or owt, but got his usual blast a facial artwork (not a euphemism) and melted softly as a tetrahedron appeared to protrude from the inside of his slanted brow. On a night where Damo was unable to join us due to young Isaac Kage’s birthday, the Ka$h Man stepped up to the plate, hey batter-batter-batter, swing batter. T’Holy Diver, private party for our amigos the Biggars, birthday and anniversary celebration combined, SB3 acoustic rocking the rainy stage to a raucous crowd of drunkenness. Alcohol everywhere, loads of lovely food too, they really did look after us… and Kal really did look after himself. No merch on sale and no roadie duties, he took his night off to the limit. First off scoring with some girl whose boyfriend was in attendance, I even saw Kal pestering him for a next-on after the fact (next on a cig in case you’re pondering that line). Then cutting promos to the lot of us on how he is the ‘reflection of perfection’ (his mirror is surely defective). He followed up with talk of knocking people out and how he doesn’t care what anyone thinks because he’s the almighty Kal. We had a cracking gig and a fun night, then into the car only to hear more tales from Lord Wasted. Eventually, the three of us pulled him up, after explaining how he’d threatened the wrong person on his new (stolen) ladies behalf, he’d refused to apologise to the poor lad. We told him that was out of order. Then silence… then a few snifters in the back… then the tears of remorse. We thought he’d topped himself at the services when he didn’t come out of the bogs for half an hour but he was probably just locating his pecker he was that hammered. Anyway, we’ve all been there, we’ve all felt the pangs of regret in the morning and we’ve all been publically shamed in our time. You live, learn (sometimes) and crack on. A spectacular tribute to his beloved Damien, this year’s SB Most Drunk award…

Winner: KALLY KA$H
CONCLUSION

Lots of highlights, very few low. We achieved our objective of being more selective and it’s paid dividends as we’ve all got on so much better, not reeling from long journeys with questionable pay offs. As ever, our prolific song writing has continued, with my bandmate-imposed writing embargo lifted mid-year, we’re currently back in the studio cutting album five. Ever the optimist, I think it’s our best yet, a blend of everything before it, true variety and the album that ties it all together like the Dude’s rug (cheers for that Deadbeat Dave). Inevitably, you’ll judge for yourself, but I’m confident you’ll enjoy our next offering. Meanwhile, the current bookings are looking tasty for 2018, with obvious standouts being not one but two Hard Rock Hell outings, All Out Rock with the likes of Skid Row and Night Ranger, as well as Sleaze with Backyard Babies and LA Guns. Plenty to get excited about in the new year.

Finally, I’d like to thank all of you for your continued support. The feedback is so rewarding and the fact anyone takes an interest in our collective output means a lot. Every year we make a lot of new fans, but those fans quickly become friends, so every time we head out to a gig it’s like a reunion. A party amongst people we enjoy spending time with, the music becomes the added bonus, a backdrop to a glorious break from the pressures of ‘real’ life. There’s something to be said for that. In a crazy world where it’s easy to get lost in the chaos of mind and matter, the simple scenario of sharing music in good company is a blessing, long may it continue. I never know how long this ride is going to last, but we’ll be on it until the power shuts down, cheers for riding with us!

It’s been the usual flow of gigs, punctuated by some big milestones in our personal lives. Damien welcomed his daughter Olivia Catherine into the world in March, and a couple of months later the heir to the Class throne arrived in the form of Casey Joseph. Against the backdrop of sleepless nights and working weeks filled with tiresome travel up and down the country, we continued to gig… up and down the country following the global release of our fourth album ‘Mass Vendetta’. German label 7Hard had us sitting on it from completion in July ’15 to release in April ’16, all the while racking up an impressive pile of reviews and national radio play. It’s safe to say it was well received, providing us with so many positive quotes you’d think we were contiguous to sliced bread. The glass ceiling did not smash despite the plethora of critical acclaim. We're quite content being forever the underdogs, barking loud under the radar, but more importantly the band's name and following grew… as did the amount of fun we had.

Time to reflect on 2016. A strange year filled with high profile celebrity deaths and political upsets. On a much smaller scale we were traipsing the miles of concrete around England, stopping only to make organised noise and drink beer. It’s time for the SB 2016 Awards…

BEST GIG
There were some crackers this year. Some big stages with awesome crowds, supplemented by rewarding feedback post-performance. Our usual star ratings can be found at the foot of this blog and you may notice there was only one 5-star gig. It wasn’t through our performance, which suffered slightly due to being on a band-break as miss Olivia Kage had arrived earlier than expected. Even tired-father-zombie Damo enjoyed it. It was our dear friends, TBFM DJs Katie and Stevi Roxx’s 10 year anniversary. The line-up was filled with their faves, and some of ours too. The atmosphere was electric and the party that ran through the whole thing was just special. So many friends, smiling, laughing, drinking and rocking out. On the way home, in high spirits, I declared that I would be surprised if this one could be topped… no surprises, it wasn’t. Legendary.
WINNER: BROOKS CLUB, ACCRINGTON (19.03.16)
WORST GIG
This one is easy, there were only a few candidates. The awful Wigan Live Festival, a dreary night in a grim venue with terrible sound. The first trip to the excellent Rock & Blues Bar in Barnsley playing to ten people, only rectified by the super cool Marcus Ward who paid extra and invited us back for a big support slot. The worst gig of the year was definitely the abysmal ‘Great British Campout’ in Peterborough. Was it the fact that we had to sleep on gravel outside the campsite having arrived too late the night prior? Was it the outdoor stage about to collapse under the slightest movement? Was it the compere/DJs being the most irritating human beings on the planet? Was it the crowd were eagerly awaiting the announcements for ‘Best VW camper’, indifferent to our snarling rock? Was it the black bugs eating us alive on stage? Probably a combination of all of it. Still, we had a brilliant day in the sun, just a woeful gig.
WINNER/LOSER: THE GREAT BRITISH CAMPOUT, PETERBOROUGH (17.07.16)
BEST VENUE
Some real contenders here, The Brickyard (Carlisle) and the Jolly Brewer (Lincoln) for the Rockmantic festivals were both excellent. The re-vamped Lincoln Imp (Scunthorpe) was a surprise contender, so different from our first appearance there 8 years ago. This one had to go to a vote… drum roll please (Queue Mason breaking eight sticks)… The 360 Club in Leeds! A special place which has a real pro feel to it, superb stage and set-up. In the past, I admit to being guilty of ducking out for a smoke and a chat during other bands. I know some people frown on that. when I was playing and promoting from 2005 to 2007 I booked and watched every minute of every band, I used to feel the frustration as people waltzed in and out as bands played their hearts out. Somewhere along the line, between tinnitus and frustration with my own band, I too became ignorant. Not always, but enough to make me feel remorse and throw down these excuses here. Safe to say, with the smoke long in the rear-view mirror, I thoroughly enjoy sitting back and watching the bands we’re on with. Bouncing along, tapping feet, analysing cool song structures and riffs, my passion for it has all flooded back in the last couple of years. The shortlist for best band is somewhat long, although this years best performance has to go to an ancient heavyweight. When I found out we were supporting Tygers I had no idea who they were. Damo, Johnny and Kalum got excited but I was none-the-wiser, maybe it was that lack of expectation which enabled me to get blown away when we watched them. Whatever the case, these guys showed me that difference in professionalism and experience, from the people, like myself, who do this as much as they can, to the people who do this because it’s how they make a living. Impressive.
WINNER: TYGERS OF PAN TANG (27.10.16)
MOST MEMORABLE JOURNEY
Rolling across the country you see all sorts. The beauty to the beasts and a whole lot of road in between. Some of the places we’ve been have surpassed expectation and impressed on arrival, like Norwich for instance, which we had down as a Shithole for some reason, well believe me, it’s really not. Less London journey’s have been a reprieve from the countless we’ve made in the last two years, though we do miss our friends in Kingston. Some journey’s have been memorable for the wrong reasons with Damien attempting to exit the vehicle at 70mph for piss whilst still asleep (yeah, you read that right). The terror and danger of those moments is imprinted on all of our memories. One big improvement has been the actual journey’s which don’t tend to rely on my DJ skills until the way home when people are tired, sleeping or all out of convo. The way down is now a constant flow of discussion on everything you can imagine – music, TV, philosophy, religion, politics, science, conspiracies, wrestling, motorsports… it’s literally non-stop. The best journey was probably the ride home from our worst gig. So pleased to escape it became filled with emotional conversations and deep discussion, it was like a therapy session which resulted in us arriving in Bispham, grabbing a Frisbee and some beer and then hitting the promenade in the fading summer sun. Times.
WINNER: RETURN FROM PETERBOROUGH (17.07.16)
BIGGEST FUCK-UP
I broke two bass-strings on stage this year, interrupting two high profile gigs. Thankfully it wasn’t the hindrance it could have been. Scotty started the wrong song in Blackpool, which never, ever happens… but did, just this once. In a year where we released and sang about ‘Train Wrecks’ we’ve not even come close to ending up in one. So, biggest Fuck-up has to go to… Damo! For not once, but twice trying to inadvertently kill us by exiting a moving vehicle at 70mph on the motorway to drain his pecker.
WINNER: DAMO’S MOTORWAY EXITS
BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT
For no particular reason we’d always wanted to get played on Planet Rock and that happened this year, we also made Kerrang Radio on several occasions too. Not that they are massive achievements but they are things that, when you’re younger, you might set your sight on as some sort of goal. Well, it’s one of those youthful aspirations which took the biscuit this year when globally renowned critic and author Mark Beamont reviewed our album for Classic Rock Magazine. It might have been one of our lower scoring reviews with only a ‘6’, but the write-up was fantastic. After making the cover CD in 2015 with Lights Over Phoenix, getting an album review in there is our personal achievement of the year. Small fry I know, but for part-timers that is a big scoop.
WINNER: CLASSIC ROCK ALBUM REVIEW
MOST DRUNK
Go on, have a guess? If you had to pick one of us, including the Lightweight Warrior that is Kalum, who would you choose?
Ok, I know I have my moments and I had a few this year, but none even come close to the Dim Reaper, Slim-boy Slim, King Famished, The Sparrow-Heart, Slender Man himself… 'El Diablo' Damien Kage. Scotty and myself returned to the NLC festival in Nottingham after grabbing some food to find Damo centre crowd being propped up by his partner in lame, Kalbo Bellend. He was asleep on his feet with various friends, peers and fans photographing him and encouraging his weak constitution. Seeing my best friend of 29 years the joke of the room always irks me, so I escorted him to the car for his own good. En route he said “you really care don’t you, thank you, thank youuuuuu…” in that wookie-esque gargle of his. I told him "I did" as I deposited him in the backseat, content he could do little damage and would sleep it off. I head back to catch the rest of the Idol Dead’s set, performing with their own drunken mess in KC Duggan, only to feel a shaky hand on my shoulder and see Damo, another pint in hand saying “They’re good these lot aren’t they?”. People were now staring at the pair of us laughing at my unimpressed reaction. Upon departure as a crowd of people chanted his name, he raced back to the bar and splatted himself upon it like a dead frogger. Kally summoned me to scrape him off and carry him out to further support for his ‘rock star’ (Knobhead) antics. On the way back his face got the usual tribal art treatment, this was also his first attempt at Band-icide as he flung the door wide striking fear into our hearts. Last year may have been a tie between Kal-Merch Destroyer in Blackpool “what country am I in?” and my 'pile of drunk' carried out of the bar Netherlands disaster. This year, there is only one winner.
WINNER: DAMIEN KAGE - NLC FESTIVAL, NOTTINGHAM (01.05.16)
CONCLUSION
So, on we go into our 13th year, which is already shaping up to be a special one. Festival slots at Rebellion, Breaking Bands, RockWich, NLC, Dementia-Fest and Bad Ass Bash already confirmed and more in the pipeline. 2017 threatens to be the year of bigger stages and even bigger crowds. We’ve tasted it many times in the last several years and it’s the meal we crave the most. There's several other big gigs edging closer to confirmation and whilst we may be finding ourselves on the road less, when Scotty does key the ignition we know it's going to be a worthwhile journey. Gone are the 'chancer' gigs of years gone by. We're also working on some new material (like we ever stopped), whether it will result in some studio time in 2017 I can't really say. One thing we will be doing is releasing a compilation of all our faster punk songs in time for Rebellion Festival, they can figure out we're a hard rock band in disguise at a later date. So, plenty to do, see and hear in the new year. For now I'd just like to say a sincere and enduring THANK YOU to all the people who have supported us this year. Whether you came to a single gig or almost every gig, bought a record, listened to us online, or simply enjoyed The Senton Bombs for a split second... cheers for being a part of what we consider to be the greatest fuckin' hobby in the world. The story follows the day-to-day antics of rockers, wasters and perennial losers Sid and Blackout as they do their best to avoid trouble whilst staying as high as they can. The strip, each containing a classic one-liner built on satire and parody of rockers world-wide, has featured in several publications over the years and can be currently found on Facebook right here.

This is not The Senton Bombs first collaboration with Wasted World, in fact, far from it. The opening track of 'Wasted World : The Music Volume 1' was the hastily recorded "It's Wasted World", by Joey Class and Ronnie Bomb (ex-Bombs drummer and current record producer), a Southpark-esque theme-track written specifically for the comic. This was followed up with an official contribution from the full band - 'Little Something' from the album 'Sweet Chin Music', which also had an accompanying music video.

Safe to say, Wasted World is well worth your time and attention. Each song details an encounter with the Prince of Darkness, resulting in trickery, deceit and death. The songs mark a deviation from the band's usual hard rock/punk style and have become firm live favourites. The artwork of this 'Senton Rock Opera' depicts three devil faces in expressions of 'See evil, hear evil, speak evil' and each song in the trilogy corresponds.

The first, 'Wedlock Horns' (taken from the critically acclaimed 2016 album 'Mass Vendetta') is about seeing evil. It follows the Devil's favourite demon, who lays eyes on the Devil's daughter and marries her. He is seduced by her succubus bridesmaids and pays the consequences of his cheating, being cooked and eaten by his wedding guests. The morale is of monogomy, told in a dark comedic style.
"Aerosmith-aping Wedlock Horns, catchy firebrand riffs designed to ring hell's own schoolbell."
Mark Beaumont - Classic Rock Magazine

The second, 'Black Chariot' (taken from the critically acclaimed 2014 E.P. 'Phantom High') is about speaking evil. The Devil rides into town on his impressive chariot, strolls into a bar, challenging a female employee to sing for the chance to ride his chariot. She obliges and wins her prize as the Devil traps her voice, snaps her neck and rides out town with her on the back of his chariot. The morale is of gluttony, the desire for things we don't need, delivered against a haunting musical soundscape.
“A blues rock spawned prowl, employing more classic and southern rock flavouring than anything they have bred before. The vocals are impressive, cleaner and clearer than those usually offered by Class and just as compelling.”
Ringmaster Review

The third, 'Darkest Horse' (taken from the critically acclaimed 2013 album 'Chapter Zero') is about hearing evil. A young woman hears the voice of the Devil and, whilst her friends and family remain oblivious, she begins to listen. Eventually she traps them all in a house and burns it down without remorse. The morale is of underestimation, being wary of those you suspect least.
"Darkest Horse could quite easily have writing credits that read “Hudson/McKagan”. A storming straight up piece of classic hard rock."
Uber Rock
The Senton Bombstag:sentonbombs.com,2005:Post/44346022016-10-24T19:47:48+01:002021-11-27T07:57:54+00:00Red Shield Video
